“Gloucester
Road was chosen for the exhibition location as the stepping
stone to the capitals museums. All its displays have been show
stoppers.” Metro, 11 Dec 2001
The awesome space at Gloucester Road station presents a
formidable challenge to any artist but in glass it is especially difficult.
Using clever combinations of glass components, metal support structures
and dramatic lighting each artist is producing a custom made piece
which fits to the site and can be fully experienced by passengers stopping
temporarily on the disused platform.
Each arch acts as a kind of frame to each piece. Works are highly
individual and range from the bizarre - an invisible ballet of absent
bodies defined only by a covering of glass fabric, through the enigmatic
- a single hanging cocoon the size of a human body and reminiscent
of a hornet's nest, to the austere - a glass layer with brick texture
which echoes the space and curves of the arch. The platform thus becomes
a linear gallery housing a strange collection of glass installations
which will surprise and fascinate the underground audience.
