Light Intervention by Angela Thwaites "The
idea was to make an intervention of light into a café using
broken fragments of clear glass, which catch daylight resulting in
a subtle but sparkling pattern of light and shadow.
The use of found materials defines the aesthetic of the work – beauty
from something broken which is considered trash - urban waste - often
unnoticed and always discarded.
The streets of London offer a wealth of broken glass fragments for
collection, the product of incident or accident. Fragments were found
from bus shelters, telephone boxes, windows, car windscreens and mirrors.
These pieces were cleaned and then fused onto panels of float glass
to create new panes of a light, simple design.
Patterns for placing these shards were generated using
both historical and contemporary maps of Brockwell Park and the surrounding
area of Brixton, giving the visual effect of logical rather than random
placement."
