As human beings we are constantly
receiving information and witnessing events which shape who we are
and the way we respond to the world. Running along side this is the
idea that the works themselves bear witness to the emotions of the
maker, and the effects of the processes which have formed them. Within
the work, viewers can find connections to their own physicality,
fragility and strength.
With glass as
with people, the inside is as important as the outside – both
have body, skin and inner landscape. Sometimes you can clearly see
in, sometimes what you see is distorted, as through a lens, and sometimes
translucency veils your view.
I use glass as an expressive medium, drawing on forms
and feelings that are embodied as tangible, tactile objects, sculptures
and installations. Although I am able to work with a range of media,
nothing else offers the same possibilities .
Glass can be fluid, it can be hard as iron:
it can
be - stretched, shaped, melted, poured, blown, cut, ground, drilled,
polished and broken. It can be transparent, translucent or completely
opaque. It can appear to change in different light and lighting conditions.
Add to this the potential tone and colour choices and glass emerges
as an unparalleled raw material for artistic expression.
