COMMISSIONS
Canary Wharf
In 1998 Angela was asked to put forward
a design for a sculptural skylight for Canada Square, Canary Wharf,
London. The proposal, entitled 'Witness', was to be cast in sections
and assembled on site in the square over an aperture looking down into
the retail mall underneath. Although it was never made and installed
full size, it remains an important project in Angela's portfolio of
commissioned work.
The concept for the skylight takes the form of a large eye. This idea
reflects an interest in vision and the human eye running through Angela's
sculptural work as well. This was combined with the idea that we are
witness to events and random experiences all the time, which affects
how we see the world.
From ground level, the curved polished surfaces of the glass would
give an intriguingly distorted view of the people in the mall below.
Looking up from the mall, the buildings, people and sky above would
appear to be gently leaning in.
